Met trots mag ik melden dat ik tijdens de Groene Camera Contest van 2022 verkozen ben tot natuurfotograaf van het jaar.
Deze titel is voorbehouden aan de categorie series in deze contest. Daarvoor moet een natuurfotograaf een samenhangende thematische serie indienen die door een vakjury wordt beoordeeld. Net zoals bij de losse beelden moeten de foto’s in de serie vrij zijn van manipulaties tijdens de nabewerking. De originele RAW-foto’s worden daarom opgevraagd ter controle, wanneer je tot de finale bent doorgedrongen. Ook kijkt een bioloog mee of de inzendingen verantwoord zijn en de onderwerpen in het Nederlandse soortenregister voorkomen.
Daarnaast mogen de foto’s alleen in Nederland of België gemaakt zijn om zodoende een gelijk speelveld voor de deelnemers te creëren.
Mijn serie heeft de naam ‘Dutch jungle’ meegekregen omdat ik wilde laten zien dat je het junglegevoel ook vlak bij huis kunt ervaren. Zeker in de coronaperiode was dat de enige manier om een jungle of oerbos te beleven. Een groot deel van de foto’s kon ik gewoon in mijn eigen gemeente maken. Voor deze serie ben ik bijna een jaar lang op pad geweest, waarbij het project gaandeweg een steeds duidelijker afgetekende vorm en stijl begon te krijgen.
Uiteindelijk moest er uit bijna 3000 foto’s een selectie gemaakt worden van 7 tot 9 beelden. Gelukkig was de selectie al gestart tijdens het project en beperkte het kiezen zich tot de aangewezen favorieten.
De foto’s zijn bijna een jaar lang te bewonderen in het Museon in Den Haag, tezamen met alle andere winnaars. Het is een modern museum voor het hele gezin waar je de relatie tussen mens, natuur en cultuur kunt ontdekken. Dus behalve de foto’s ook nog zeker een bezoekje waard.

This title is reserved for the series category in this contest. In this category, a nature photographer must submit a coherent thematic series that is assessed by a jury of experts. As with the individual images, the photos in the series must be free from manipulations during post-processing. The original RAW photos are therefore requested once you have made it to the final. A biologist checks whether the entries are justified and whether the subjects are included in the Dutch species register.
In addition, the photos may only be taken in the Netherlands or Belgium in order to create a level playing field for the participants.
My series has been given the name ‘Dutch jungle’ because I wanted to show that you can also experience the jungle feeling close to home. Especially in the corona period, this was the only way to experience a jungle or forest. I was able to take a large part of the photos in my own municipality. I’ve been on the road for almost a year for this series, with the project gradually taking on an increasingly defined shape and style.
In the end, a selection of 7 to 9 images had to be made from almost 3000 photos. Fortunately, the selection had already started during the project and the selection was limited to the designated favorites.
The photos can be admired in the Museon in The Hague for almost a year, together with all the other winners. It is a modern museum for the whole family where you can discover the relationship between people, nature and culture. So in addition to the photos, it is definitely worth a visit.
